Who is Najuah? Well, I am one half of the girl-duo Najuah with my sister Jules. We started this journey somewhere on the moon where time doesn’t exist and continue to create music because it’s something that we love to do. When I started The Things I Wish I Knew, we were staying in LA while we recorded new music. At the time I was also interning for a few Canadian online publications. I remember the editor of one of the magazines saying, “you should start a blog, I think it would be interesting.” At the time, the idea of sharing my life or my thoughts was odd to me.
Then I began to realize, well everybody seems to want my advice or know what skincare products or supplements I am into. Where I shop or what’s my favourite place to travel. So, I decided to create The Things I Wish I Knew a lifestyle website (FYI this is NOT A BLOG), where I could share life lessons and eventually my love for music – MY MUSIC.
What Does NAJUAH Mean?
The golden question. Najuah, pronounced
New Music
It’s been a journey, to say the least. We have toured, been on the radio, MTV/Much Music. We have experienced the highs and lows of this wild industry. One thing I will tell anyone who wants to be an artist, trust the process. Life has a way of leading you in the right direction. It has always seemed to steer us on music’s road.
For this new single RUNNING, we worked with Donovan Jarvis who’s worked with Young Thug, Kevin Gates, Austin Mahone, Musique Soulchild and Chris Brown. I actually stumbled upon him on Instagram, sent him our previous album to see if he would be interested. Luckily he was. Within a few months, we created this beautiful song with also the help of Chris Creglia an amazing vocal engineer/producer/songwriter. We were honoured when 3x Grammy award-winning Gary Noble (he won for his work with Amy Winehouse) said yes to mixing it and felt even more love when Grammy award-winning badass boss babe Emily Lazar (SIA, Coldplay, HAIM, Ruth B) added the final touch in mastering.
Why RUNNING
RUNNING is about the current dating rollercoaster that we all seem to find ourselves on. With ghosting, hookups, the friend with benefits and all of the in-between grey area bullshit. A lot of good hearts will be broken. It’s about recognizing your self-worth and getting the courage to let go of bad love habits.
The Music Video
We have known Director Ryan Thompson for a few years. He’s probably one of the coolest guys you will ever meet and he’s super talented. Like what can’t RT do?! He came up with this amazing concept for our video along with Creative Director Diana Lynn Vandermeulen. Amy Blaxland Creative Assistant helped to bring this amazing video together. Director of Photography Adam Seward brought this amazing vision to life. Thank you, Kyle Phillips, for being apart of this great day. Kyle was on hand helping the whole team as well as capturing all those amazing behind the scenes images I have been posting on our Facebook page.
Shit happens, because what is life without a little chaos, thankfully makeup artist Shawnna Downing saved the day. She definitely is the perfect addition to the team, thanks, girl!
This year, I will be sharing a little more music and perhaps a little more of my life. You will still get all the other good stuff you come here to read! Until then, what are the things you wish you knew? x H.
